Control the Borders
3/17/2004

We are a nation at war; war against terror and war against terrorists. While we do have some well-defined ‘front lines’ such as Iraq and Afghanistan we have many more ‘front lines’ that aren’t as well defined.

These hidden front lines are everywhere; the ticket counter at the airport, the car rental office, the customs service at the dock and perhaps most importantly the thousands of miles of borders surrounding our country.

We’ve deployed our military to Iraq and Afghanistan, we’ve given more rights and responsibilities to ticket agents and rental counter employees and we’ve given additional authority to our customs service officers. Yet with all this, we continue to allow an almost unfettered stream of illegal aliens to pour in from the south.

The fact that we have illegal aliens in the United States is not what concerns me at this point; what concerns me is that we’re allowing undocumented, unknown and unverified people to enter our country.

While it is possible that the illegal may simply be crossing the border in search of a better life it is just as possible that he’s sneaking in with a backpack nuke and heading straight for California’s most populated areas.

Each and every illegal alien that enters our country “under the radar” has the potential to cruelly and cataclysmically take thousands if not millions of lives. My question to you is this; what is more important? Being careful not to stifle the dreams and ambitions of illegal aliens or preventing millions of deaths?

The key to our nation’s security is knowledge. We must know who is in our country and what they are doing. We must be able to check that information against known threats. We need to find out where our visitors are going and when they will be returning home. Only when we have this information can we say that the visitor poses little or no threat to our nation’s security.

By creating such a “green pasture” on our side of the border we’re seeding the dreams of thousands of foreigners. With the constant influx of these dreamers unwilling to enter our country legally we’re unwittingly giving cover to those that wish to enter and harm the US. While we’re busy giving free healthcare to a thousand illegal aliens, the terrorist that entered the country with them is on the bus to Los Angeles with the bomb in his pack.

The biggest problem we have with our borders is that so many bleeding hearts in our society are willing to extend their hands and give out “better lives” without ever asking any questions. Illegals receive free health care, free social services and at one time even qualified for drivers’ licenses. We routinely grant amnesty, allowing them to stay, without ever truly knowing who they are.

The answer is simple. Plug the leaks. Give our border agents the manpower and equipment necessary to stem the tide of illegal immigrants. It’s rather interesting; we as Americans have the right to shoot and kill the burglar breaking into our house to steal our valuables but we must sit back and do nothing while thousands break into our country, each with the potential to kill millions.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m in no way advocating closing our borders. I’m not suggesting that we shut down immigration and keeping everyone out of our country. What I am suggesting is that we need to control who enters our country. Only those potential immigrants that pass our security test and meet the guidelines already in place by our immigration service should be allowed to enter.

In other words, we need our department of immigration to do its job. We need more border agents and more support staff. Instead of sending all of our state-of-the-art personnel and equipment overseas to the various battles we need to send it to the real front line – our borders with Mexico and Canada – to protect the Homeland.

Only when our borders are finally under control
could we in the US even begin to think we're safe
in our homes, on our streets and in our skies.
