The Dark Truths of Tissue Donation
Chris has finally finished his first book, The Dark Truths Of Tissue Donation. It is Chris' memoirs of his career as a tissue procurement technician, written from his point-of-view as a parent who lost a child, donated her organs and tissues and later worked for the tissue bank that recovered his daughter's tissues.

The internal battle between Chris' conscience and the demands of the tissue banking industry grew too great for Chris to bear and he eventually had to quit woking for the tissue bank (read the summary below).

On March 1st of 1999 my wife and I found ourselves faced with the fact that our two-year-old daughter had suffered a severe brain injury and would never recover. Her body was being kept alive by a cocktail of medications and a ventilator but her soul was already gone.

We were presented with the opportunity to donate Alyssa’s organs and tissues and we gladly offered everything we could. Our goal was simple; to do what we could to prevent another mother and father from looking down upon their dying daughter knowing that nothing could be done to save her.
As a result of our experiences with organ and tissue donation I soon found myself changing not only my job but also my career by accepting a position within the very same tissue bank that had procured some of Alyssa’s gifts. I was so moved by our experiences and believed in donation so strongly that I felt I had to do everything I could to help other families understand the true scope of organ, eye and tissue donation and what an incredible thing it truly is.

Almost immediately, though, I began seeing a side of the tissue banking industry that no donor family should ever see; donated gifts are reduced to dollars and sense and profits and dividends reign supreme.

For many years tissue banks have taken advantage of the law and taken advantage of the donors and donor families. One the one hand the law allows tissue banks to be reimbursed for “expenses” associated with the procurement and processing of the tissue and on the other hand the law makes it illegal to reimburse the donor families for even a fraction of the profits the tissue banks reap off the gifts so selflessly given.

The public façade of tissue banks is that of caring, understanding organizations portraying themselves as ‘stewards of the gifts’, making donation possible and helping to improve and even save lives when the gifts are transplanted into the recipient.

The true nature of tissue banks, though, is the same as every other for-profit institution: the bottom line. How they earn a profit is less of a concern than whether they earn a profit and how much it is. The tissue banking industry earns billions each year off the generous gifts you and I give when we choose to become tissue donors.

It is important for all of us to understand what goes on behind the closed doors of tissue banks across the nation. We need to understand not just how they are taking advantage of the generosity of others but also how they operate on a day to day basis.

Working in a tissue bank was both an incredibly wonderful and incredibly horrible experience at the same time. It was wonderful to be a part of the incredible process of tissue donation and transplantation but yet knowing the true nature of the industry and the daily operations was horrific for someone that had just donated his daughter’s tissues.
Had I known what really goes on within the tissue banking industry I would have never agreed to Alyssa’s donation.

Tissue banks need to be exposed for what they are: thoughtless, uncaring and unsympathetic profit and dividend machines.

In this book I take you through the entire donation process from start to finish. I explain the intricacies of the process and the inner workings of the industry with the knowledge I gained as an industry professional.

I expose the problems and abuses in the industry as seen through the sad eyes of a donor family member. Everything is brought out in the open; the true dollar value of a human body, the incredible profits tissue banks earn, how donors are really thought of by industry executives, how donors are treated by industry professionals.

Organ, eye and tissue donation has always been one of the most caring, giving acts we as human beings can carry out. Giving parts of ourselves as we die so that others may live is the true definition of a selfless act. The industry must never forget that small, simple fact and treat the donor and the gifts with nothing but respect.

Only when the dark truths of tissue donation are exposed will the industry be forced to change the way it does business. Only then will the public demand change to stop the reign of profiteering tissue banks and return the industry to the altruistic endeavor it once was.
