The
cold hard truth is that the driver's license does not impact
the holder's donation.
In
every single case of death the decision to donate rests
firmly on the Next of Kin's (NOK's) shoulders (click
here for more on NOKs).
Although
a person's driver's license indicates he or she wishes to
donate, procurement organizations will always follow the
wishes of the NOK.
The
only instance in where a driver's license will be used is
if the holder has no NOK.
Having
the signature and sticker on your driver's license is, however,
wonderful advertising for the donation 'cause'. Every
time you present your license to write a check, verify your
identity or verify your age, the person looking at your
license will see that you are an organ, eye and tissue donor.
It just may cause that person to consider his or her own
decision regarding donation.
And
contrary to what some belive, having the sticker and signature
on your license will NEVER cause emergency medical services
to not do everything in their power to save your life.
No medical professional will ever allow an organ, eye and
tissue donor to pass away simply for the purpose of procuring
organs, eyes or tissue for transplantation.
The
way Chris put's it is this: Why would a doctor allow
you to die just to use your organs and tissues? When
you die, your account is closed and he won't make a single
dime off you. Keeping you alive, though, will ensure
his income for the rest of your life.
